Helping Company Directors Navigate Debt with Clarity, Compassion and Confidence
Business Helpline Services Guide
When pressure builds from HMRC or creditors, you don’t need jargon, you need clear options. This page is a plain-English overview of the routes available to UK limited company directors.
Start with the summaries below, then click through for full guidance on suitability, timelines, costs, and director impact.
If you’re under immediate pressure (e.g. HMRC arrears, High Court Enforcement, Statutory Demand or a Winding-Up Petition), a short 10-minute options call will give you a straight answer on whether to stabilise (Time to Pay/CVA) or close via CVL.

Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation (CVL)
A director-led closure when there’s no realistic path to break-even. A liquidator is appointed, trading stops, assets are realised, and unsecured company debts are dealt with in the liquidation.
Typical appointment timeline: around 1–2 weeks (urgent cases can be faster).

Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA)
A legally binding proposal to repay part of what’s owed over time while trading continues. Works where the core business is viable but arrears are too heavy for short-term recovery.
Requires creditor approval; typical set-up 4–8 weeks.

Members’ Voluntary Liquidation (MVL)
A solvent wind-down used to distribute funds to shareholders after all debts are paid. Begins with a Declaration of Solvency and is often the most tax-efficient route when closing a successful company.

Administration
An insolvency practitioner takes control to protect the business/assets and achieve the best outcome for creditors (rescue, better-than-liquidation realisation, or sale).
If employees are retained beyond 14 days, certain employment liabilities are adopted in administration.
